On Debian it gives you a list of resolutions to choose after | autodetecting the monitor. At this point I can't tell. I switched back to Fedora/Slackware dual boot. Maybe when I get more computers set up I can give Ubuntu and Debian another try. One area of problem I am finding is that windowing environment software, e.g. Gnome and KDE, are handling geometry configurations themselves, and storing these settings themselves. A colleague at work showed me where the native resolution of his LCD monitor was NOT offered as one of the choices, even though it is a common one a lot of monitors have (1440x900). Yet geometries larger and smaller were offered. These programs need to _always_ offer of course what they things is the appropriate match, as well as legacy safe modes (640x480 or so), plus also offer all the common modes (probably 2 or 3 dozen), _plus_ advanced setup (on a separate panel) that includes setting detailed clocks and full modelines. If I am called to help because none of the standard selections works right, I need to be able to get in control in the context it works with (since apparently is resets what xorg.conf set when a user logs in). You'll need a fixed spaced font, plenty of width, and a usenet client that won't wrap long (88 cols) lines when you don't want it to, to see this table: height ------------------------------------- width ------------------------------------- | 640 768 800 864 960 1024 1152 1280 1440 1536 1600 1680 1728 1920 2048 2304 2560 480 4:3 8:5 5:3 9:5 2:1 . . . . . . . . . . . . 512 5:4 3:2 . . . 2:1 . . . . . . . . . . . 576 . 4:3 . 3:2 5:3 16:9 2:1 . . . . . . . . . . 600 . . 4:3 . 8:5 . . . . . . . . . . . . 640 1:1 . 5:4 . 3:2 8:5 9:5 2:1 . . . . . . . . . 648 . . . 4:3 . . 16:9 . . . . . . . . . . 720 . . . . 4:3 . 8:5 16:9 2:1 . . . . . . . . 768 . 1:1 . . 5:4 4:3 3:2 5:3 . 2:1 . . . . . . . 800 . . 1:1 . . . . 8:5 9:5 . 2:1 . . . . . . 810 . . . . . . . . 16:9 . . . . . . . . 864 . . . 1:1 . . 4:3 . 5:3 16:9 . . 2:1 . . . . 900 . . . . . . . . 8:5 . 16:9 . . . . . . 960 . . . . 1:1 . . 4:3 3:2 8:5 5:3 . 9:5 2:1 . . . 1024 . . . . . 1:1 . 5:4 . 3:2 . . . . 2:1 . . 1050 . . . . . . . . . . . 8:5 . . . . . 1080 . . . . . . . . 4:3 . . . 8:5 16:9 . . . 1152 . . . . . . 1:1 . 5:4 4:3 . . . 5:3 16:9 2:1 . 1200 . . . . . . . . . . 4:3 . . 8:5 . . . 1280 . . . . . . . 1:1 . . 5:4 . . 3:2 8:5 9:5 2:1 1296 . . . . . . . . . . . . 4:3 . . 16:9 . 1440 . . . . . . . . 1:1 . . . . 4:3 . 8:5 16:9 1536 . . . . . . . . . 1:1 . . . 5:4 4:3 3:2 5:3 1600 . . . . . . . . . . 1:1 . . . . . 8:5 1728 . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:1 . . 4:3 . 1920 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:1 . . 4:3 2048 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:1 . 5:4 | 640 768 800 864 960 1024 1152 1280 1440 1536 1600 1680 1728 1920 2048 2304 2560 height ------------------------------------- width ------------------------------------- -- |---------------------------------------/----------------------------------| | Phil Howard KA9WGN (ka9wgn.ham.org) / Do not send to the address below | | first name lower case at ipal.net / spamtrap-2007-09-07-2221@ipal.net | |------------------------------------/-------------------------------------|
