So, your wife just 'volunteered' to buy you a brand new videocard with
digital inputs or to buy a new VHS/DVD burner (the latter cost less and
IMHO works better).

Actually, it comes out of H. Rider Haggard, the novel "She". That
predates Rumpole, surely.
There's a far more common and recent US use of the term, though I
can't quite place who kept using the term. I'm thinking Jerry Pournelle
in his column in Byte, but that may not be it.
