If it is ISA, to make it bootable, you will have to compile the driver into the kernel (you cannot use a modular driver, because the kernel will not be able to use the disks to load the driver module.) If you don't want to do this, you can boot from an IDE disk attached using the onboard controller, then load the appropriate kernel modules for the ISA controller, and then mount the disks attached to it. Your first stage is to identify which module is appropriate for your card. (I'm sorry I can't remember off the top of my head, but I am 90% certain that there is a kernel supplied driver for that card.)
