Subject: growisofs requires rebooting after every burn ?

Hi,
I find that I need to shut down (power off) and restart
the computer after burning any dvd with growisofs (or
any other utility that depends on it). Only after doing
this can I burn another CD or DVD. If I don't do this
the computer just hangs when attempting to burn and
becomes unresponsive to any key pressed from the
keyboard (not even alt-cntrl-del).
I am using kernel 2.6.22.2 with Debian/Etch.
The CD/DVD burner is
TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Googling I could find another such report but there was
no solution offered.
I would be grateful for your help.
sincerely
b thomas

Chances are pretty good that you don't.
The reality is far more likely that you've simply jumped
to the conclusion that you have to reboot to "fix the
problem". The fact that rebooting does "fix the problem"
doesn't mean it's the actual solution.
You've really not told us anything. You think there
is some magic problem, and that rebooting will magically
fix it.
You need to be looking in your logs to see what messages
are being sent there. Likely there is a really good clue
somewhere in there.
Until you can come up with real symptoms, nobody can
provide a solution, because we don't know what's going on.

Thank you very much for that tip. Doing
a device reset (hdparm -w /dev/hdc) does
fix the problem. The command echoed
DMA disabled
device reset
And then I was to burn just as after a reboot.
Would you also be able to point me towards
where to look (such as log files) to try
and identify what is causing this behaviour
(i.e. the need to reset DVD burner after
every burn).
I do see error messages in /var/log/kern.log.0 such
as
Sep 22 16:39:24 chomsky kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy}
Sep 22 16:39:24 chomsky kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Sep 22 16:39:24 chomsky kernel: hdc: drive not ready for command
but am not sure what to make of it.
Sincerely

I posted a snippet of kern.log in response to
another post in this thread. If you let me
know which logs you would like me to post
I would gladly do so.

I don't have any other OS installed and haven't used them
either. Unfortunately I don't have any other OS. I lost
the disk a while ago. There seems to be no error in the
disks burnt. I have no problem reading/ejecting and
reading with the burner (/dev/hdc)
The only other problem I have noticed is that sometimes
on watching a DVD with the player (/dev/hdd) using
Xine, the drive fails to eject after shutting down Xine.
This happens if I try to eject by pressing the tray
open button. However "eject /dev/hdd" as root
does eject the disk.

DMA is turned on by default after each boot.
However the hdparm -w command disabled DMA
and the last successful burn was done without
using DMA. I am not aware of any command line
switches to use DMA and hence don't use it.

I have a CDR drive that does this from time to time. It hangs after I issue an
eject command, and the disk does not eject. Annoyingly the drive seems to lose
power, and the only way to reset it appears to be to reboot the computer. I
think in the past I have physically plugged the power cable out of the back of
the drive and plugged it back in again, but I don't like doing this when the
computer is powered on. (It is an internal IDE drive.)
ps -ef|grep eject
root 9653 9652 0 Sep28 ? 00:00:00 eject /dev/cdrom
kill -9 9653 (done as root)
ps -ef|grep eject
root 9653 9652 0 Sep28 ? 00:00:00 eject /dev/cdrom

I don't know whether I do or not. I'll find out when I next burn a disk.

My disks burn ok, and pass md5sum verification.
