Subject: Can I play a region 1 DVD in my region 2 dvd recorder?

I would like to play a region 1 dvd on my region 2 dvd rewriter drive.
My drive is a Lite-On DVDRW S0HW-012S rewriter.
I have mounted the disk, but when I try to play the video files, I get errors
as follows:
mplayer *.vob
Playing vts_01_0.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_01_1.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_01_2.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_01_3.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_01_4.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_02_0.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_02_1.vob.
Seek failed
Playing vts_03_1.vob.
Seek failed
Presumably this is due to the region code not matching the region of my drive
(I am in the United Kingdom.)
Is there a way to play this disk?
Mark.

Region coding is implemented in the drive's firmware. I've heard that
many DVD+-RWs have alternate firmware that totally ignores regions.
Some DVD-ROM machines had special codes you could use to turn off region
coding as well, like the old Apex players and the "you should not be
here" menu. It might be useful to Google://"S0HW-012S firmware region"
and see what you can find.

Can I do this across a network? The computer with the DVD drive is remote, and
has no graphical display. I currently mount the drive, and access the content
via a network share.

Mark.
