Conservatives Embarrass Canada on World Stage November 26, 2007 Prime Minister Stephen Harper must show leadership by working with the international community to combat one of the greatest threats facing mankind, instead of embarrassing Canada on the world stage by blocking efforts to tackle climate change, the Liberal Opposition said today. "The world agrees that climate change must be fought with firm targets and binding commitments," said Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion. "At the Commonwealth conference, the Prime Minister stood in the way of progress: he sabotaged the conference. "Why is the Prime Minister leading Canadians in a race to the bottom in the worst ecological threat facing humanity?" Mr. Dion was referring to Mr. Harper's shameful performance at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Uganda, where Canada was virtually alone in blocking an agreement among 53 countries that would have bound them to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. "The Prime Minister showed at the Commonwealth conference that he doesn't believe in climate change," said Mr. Dion. "He spent his whole adult life denying its very existence. When you don't have any conviction, you can't make bold decisions for Canada or for the world. "Instead of leading by example, this Prime Minister was sabotaging the Commonwealth process. We want our nation to be part of this fight against climate change but you don't go second, when you're Canada, you lead." Deputy Leader Michael Ignatieff said the disappointing outcome of the Summit is due to Mr. Harper's stubborn 'I'm right and everyone else is wrong' approach. "To the Prime Minister everyone else is wrong on climate change: the Commonwealth is wrong, the United Nations is wrong, the science is wrong," said Mr. Ignatieff. "When the Commonwealth turned to Canada and asked to commit to binding targets, Canada looked away." The Liberal Opposition believes that leadership means taking real action on important issues that matter to Canadians. Climate change is one of them. It's time Mr. Harper stops jeopardizing Canada's international reputation and shows leadership in the global effort to fight climate change.
