(K): It wasn't coincidence that Mulroney was asking for a 'full inquiry' on Schreiber's allegations right about the time that Harper's Justice Department decided Schreiber should be extradited to Germany. They knew that Schreiber had promised NO testimony if extradited. Of course, that meant the Tories had to move fast to get him extradited. One political oppoistion party has had enough of Harper's games in our government. They've moved - with an extraordinary political tactic - to ensure that Schreiber ISN'T extradited and his testimony against Mulroney lost forever. You go, Pat Martin! _________________________ From Monday's Globe and Mail - November 26, 2007 Rarely used warrant sought to ensure Schreiber testifies OTTAWA - The federal New Democratic Party says it will table a motion today to use the little-known power of a Speaker's warrant to force Karlheinz Schreiber to testify in front of a parliamentary committee and block his extradition to Germany. Pat Martin, the NDP MP on the House of Commons ethics committee who has been pushing for Mr. Schreiber's testimony on his dealings with former prime minister Brian Mulroney, says he will table the paperwork today for two Speaker's warrants so that the committee can vote on them tomorrow. "I don't want to waste any more time," Mr. Martin said. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has already announced a public inquiry following Mr. Schreiber's allegation that he discussed a financial arrangement with Mr. Mulroney before he left office that led to $300,000 in cash payments. But Mr. Schreiber is in jail awaiting extradition to Germany on Dec. 1, where he faces charges of fraud and tax evasion. Opposition members believe Mr. Schreiber will never testify if he leaves Canada. Last week, the ethics committee officially invited Mr. Schreiber to tell his story before leaving for Germany, but officials have not yet figured out how to get Mr. Schreiber out of jail to testify. The committee voted to give its chairman, Liberal MP Paul Szabo, the power he needs to subpoena Mr. Schreiber. But the NDP's Mr. Martin said he has no faith that Mr. Szabo will use that power effectively. So he is starting his own parallel process of asking for Speaker's warrants, he told CTV's Question Period yesterday. "We need to get him here prior to his deportation on the first of December. And I can tell you there are a lot of powerful people in Canada who would rather see the hind end of Mr. Schreiber," Mr. Martin said. "His list is something like the Hollywood madam - there are a lot of people that are on that list who would rather that list is never exposed." In an interview, Mr. Martin said he did not have faith that Mr. Szabo and the Liberals would use their power effectively to make sure Mr. Schreiber would testify. "I don't want to be jerked around by them any longer, frankly," he said. Unless the government or Mr. Szabo comes up with a more effective way to bring Mr. Schreiber before the committee, MPs will have to vote on his motion tomorrow, he said, adding that he thinks the motion will force the hand of Liberal committee members. "We'll be guilting them into it. This is a test." The Speaker's warrants, which were last used to force testimony in 1913, would order authorities at the Toronto West Detention Centre to release Mr. Schreiber and then give him time to go home, collect his paperwork and change his clothes before appearing before the committee, Mr. Martin added. But Mr. Szabo said yesterday that his committee already has the authority it needs to make sure Mr. Schreiber will appear, along with his records and paperwork. Still, the Liberal MP said he was still holding out hope that Justice Minister Rob Nicholson will stay the extradition order. If that fails, Mr. Szabo said he will move to issue a subpoena, which he believes will override the extradition order. Author William Kaplan, who has written on the relationship between Mr. Mulroney and Mr. Schreiber, said the committee was behaving "like a kangaroo court" with its antics and infighting. Its quest to hear Mr. Schreiber's full story is, he argued, unrealistic. "They [committee members] are seriously misinformed if they seriously believe that Mr. Schreiber is going to - over the course of three two-hour Commons sessions - tell them everything he knows," Mr. Kaplan told CTV's Question Period. "Unless the government of Canada agrees to allow Karlheinz Schreiber to stay in this country, he's not going to tell anyone anything." The Speaker's warrant will not prevent Schrieber from being extradited. The Speaker's warrant will not compell a doomed man to sing. All it means is they can get him out of jail and put him in a position to testify before December 1'st... the day he is scheduled to be delivered to Germany. Silence is the only bargaining chip he has left, until he gets a stay of extradition he isn't going to blow his wad.

(K): Smart man. If he can give the committee just enough to show he has a helluva lot more to disclose about Mulroney, he deserves a reprieve from extradition. No 'former prime minister' facing charges of corruption, perjury and falsely receiving $2.1 million from the taxpayers should have a case against him thrown out because his current pal in the PM's seat is using extradition to cover his ass. The fact that the Opposition parties feel they need to rush testimony from Schreiber before the Tories can ship him out of the country and silence him for good, is reason enough to suspect a major coverup by Harper. I'd like to see Mulroney go down - big time. And I want Harper to be taken down for trying to cover up for him. Slick, conniving and bullying by Harper is one thing. Overt lies and coverups are what governments go down for. Ask the Chretien Liberals. Ask the Chretien Liberals. Or the BC NDP when Harcourt was leader (Commonwealth Holding Society).

Ask the Chretien Liberals. Not likely to happen. He had Chrétien and Martin as mentors. Just consider this another broken Harpo promise as was not putting some integrity and accountability into Ottawa one of his promises?
