(K): We see this a whole lot every time a rightwing government gets into
office and starts introducing very unpopular policies and utilizing ruthless
methods to enforce them. In some provinces, they lock the doors of the
central government buildings and the doors of their MPs and MLAs.
In Harper's case, he's bringing in ARMED GUARDS just as Bush has had to do
in the U.S. Bad government + bad policies = scared politicians. Do we
put up with the guns in our Parliament, or do we just get rid of the bad
government that needs them?

Armed guards in Parliament unsettle some MPs
OTTAWA -- Several MPs are concerned about a new security measures in
Parliament, including the previously unarmed House of Commons security
service being issued with batons and the possibility that they may one day
carry sidearms.
The shift, including the presence of armed security constables in civilian
clothing at all public entrances to buildings housing MPs within the
parliamentary precinct, has been gradual under new Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin
Vickers.
The ramp-up has taken place with an increase of the profile of Canada's
combat mission in Afghanistan, and following concerns over the past two
years about weaknesses found in Parliament Hill security following the
2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S.
As well, the arrest of a group of alleged terrorist plotters in Toronto
last year heightened worries, since they had allegedly targeted Parliament
Hill.
Vickers, a retired RCMP officer, says there is no plan to arm the House of
Commons security service. But, sources have said the possibility has been
discussed, and is being held off because of the extra cost and training it
would require.
Several MPs said they would oppose sidearms for the uniformed guards
because of the image it would create for thousands of tourists who stream
through the Centre Block every year.
NDP MP Yvon Godin said he has visited legislative assemblies in other
countries where uniformed guards carry weapons and he felt it to be
intimidating.
"Parliament is a place where I want people to come in and feel like home,"
said Godin. "I don't want people to come in there and see people with guns."
Godin and Liberal MP Garth Turner also were surprised to learn the guards,
many of them new recruits who have entered the security service over the
past year, now carry batons.
"I don't know what the threat is," said Turner. "I don't understand, as a
guy who works in these buildings all day like you, why we need people to
protect us with sticks and guns."
The only security-related incidents within the parliamentary buildings
over the past decade have involved demonstrators who infiltrated the
public galleries of the Commons to make vocal protests. However, even
senior members of the security service have criticized the location of the
main electronic screening centre for visitors - inside the Centre Block
just under the Peace Tower.
Liberal whip Karen Redman was also surprised at the trend. Redman is a
member of the all-powerful Commons board of internal economy and said she
had not heard of any plan to arm guards.

You think Harper is right wing?
I could swear he is neo left liberal. In fact, you could take the party
policies of the Liberal and Conservatives and swap them, change Conservative
to Liberal and visa versa, and 95% of Canadians reading it would not tell
the difference between the to party polices.
Identical twins have more differences. But Harper does know how to get away
with a lie better than most.
